Eating Our Way Through Greenville: Tirados Empanadas and More
I was introduced to this restaurant last week by some co-workers. Chris and I checked it out tonight and it was as good as I remembered it being last visit.
Tirados has a cool back story. They used to have a food cart which landed them on Food Network’s “Food Court Wars” hosted by Chef Tyler Florence. They won the grand prize which enabled them to open a location in Spartanburg. In 2015, they relocated to Greenville and have been serving up great Puerto Rican/Caribbean fare ever since.
They have taken empanadas and added an American twist. The Caribbean chicken and savory beef offerings are great but I loved their take on a cheese pizza and pulled pork (not together of course). Marinara sauce and mozzarella in an empanada=Hot Pockets minus the grease in the best possible way. The pulled pork empanada pairs juicy BBQ with a Carolina style mustard sauce. It is excellent! The rice with gandules and potato salad wasn’t bad either. (I’m picky about potato salad since my Grandpa’s was the best I’ve ever had.)
If you go, you have to try the coconut cake. Oh my word! It’ll make you slap your mama it’s so good! It was super moist and the icing was perfection. Chris doesn’t like coconut so he missed out.
All in all, Tirados is a great family run hole in the wall. We recommend it! They have new hours so check to see if they are open before you go!
