“Baby in the City” Baby Shower

I was given the charge to decorate for a baby shower with instructions to incorporate the color gray, don’t include too much pink or sparkle, and include references to New York City. I went back and forth over how to depict the skyline and illustrate the Big Apple in a not so literal way.

I found a steel gray tablecloth at Bed Bath and Beyond that served as a foundation for the table. On a trip to HomeGoods, I discovered a giant ceramic apple. After a coat of Krylon, it was a nice pearlized baby pink. It fit perfectly on top of a Pottery Barn pillar candle stand that I had from my wedding.

After scouring the Internet for inexpensive city skyline maps or adhesive decals, a trip to Hobby Lobby led to a piece of glitter canvas ribbon. I free handed a skyline, cut it out, and layered it under an organza table runner for the city touch.

A few pink roses from Fresh Market, vases and candles from Hobby Lobby, and a tassel garland from Homegoods later, the look was complete.

A silver glitter ribbon turned into a bow gave the ceramic apple a more girly feel. There is always that moment in a project when you hit a mental roadblock but it feels great to get past that time and produce something memorable.
