House renovations are the adult version of the nursery rhyme “there was an old lady who swallowed a fly…” We planned to redo the hardwood floors and move the washer and dryer to a new location. That plan turned into…
Decide to refinish hardwood floors…notice terrible linoleum in kitchen…rip out layers of linoleum…run hardwood floors into kitchen…
Take out chimney enclosed in wall…run new floors in it…frame new closet in…
Notice cast iron tub…take tub out…gut entire bathroom…tile bathroom floor and walls…get new tub and vanity.
Notice that some interior walls are paneling over plaster…demo walls…decide open concept living room is a good idea…take out entire wall…install wooden support beam
Figure that since most of the interior walls are open we should redo the electrical wiring of entire house…while running wire decide to move lights around and put in some recess lighting
Decide that laundry should be moved to side room….move all the plumbing from previous location….notice that bathroom plumbing is old…redo the lines in the bathroom
Check out the furnace…realize that chimney was vent…reroute the vents throughout the house
That “demo day” stuff on HGTV is not reality.
